Q'EROS COMMUNITY PROJECT

The communities of Q’eros are located in the Vilcanota range of the Peruvian Andes in the Municipality of Paucartambo and the Department of Cusco. The five villages total approximately 1,000 inhabitants and are led by a unique government of elected officials.

Believing that they are the last existing population directly descended from the Incas, the indigenous Q'eros attribute their survival of the Spanish Conquest to the protection from their sacred mountains, the Apus. Like their ancestors, the Q'eros raise potatoes, llamas, alpaca that they consume and exchange for goods from the jungle, including the sacred Coca leaf. Two roads currently being built toward the isolated Q’eros communities are bringing great potential but also threats of mining, tourism exploitation and loss of traditional knowledge.
